Hawaii Vacation in Lanai City - Hotel Lanai - Lodging near the island of Maui

Hotel Lanai is located in, the central highlands of The Island of Lanai. In the early days of this century, the hotel provided the only accommodations for most visitors to the island. Back then, Lanai was considered to be the world's largest pineapple plantation. It was the first hotel built on the island, and remains one of Hawaii's rare inland hotels. Mr. James D. Dole built the Inn as a retreat for executives and guests of The Dole Company.

Later, the Hotel Lanai became a meeting place for generations of local residents and visitors to share fine food and to "talk story". The atmosphere of the 10 room and 1 bedroom cottage is reminiscent of a fine plantation estate. The hotel is located up the hill, overlooking Lanai City.

The city, which may be more aptly named "Lanai Town," has a modest population of around 2,500 people.
Interestingly, there are not many buildings in town taller than 1 story high. For shopping, there are 3 small town general stores; all of which are closed by 7:00pm. The stores also close for mid-afternoon on siesta and early on Sundays. Lanai City has one movie house, which shows 1 or 2 films per week.

The 10 rooms, located in two wings of the original building, are connected by a glass veranda. A separate cottage, which once served as a caretaker's residence, is also available. All guests rooms have private tiled bathroom facilities with pedestal sinks. Adding to the hotel's charm and character are hardwood floors, ceiling fans, country quilts, and original pictures of the old plantation days on Lanai.

Guests rooms range in size to accommodate twin, double, queen, and king sized beds... some of which feature four post beds. The most requested rooms are those with a shared lanai, or porch. This gives the guests a place to unwind with a great view of the town and sunset through the tall pines.

STORY OF LANAI

The history of Lanai is deeply rooted in folk tales and legends. The early stories tell us tales of a banished and mischievous prince, who chased away the resident spirits of the island, there by, making the Lanai suitable for habitation.

In the last few centuries, great battles were fought on the island, as warrior chiefs sought power and control of territory. One hundred years later, a Mormon Missionary sought control of Lanai by collecting all available deeds for his cattle ranch.
In this century, Lanai became known as the world's largest pineapple plantation. Today, Lanai is forging itself into a world-class playground vacation destination, and luxury home development.

Lanai is the third smallest island in the Hawaiian Islands chain. Lanai is situated off the western coast of the Island Maui. Lanai is approximately 13 miles wide and 18 miles long. Ground elevations vary from sea level to more than 3,300 feet.

Once, Lanai was known as, "The Pineapple Island." Today Lanai is called the, "The Secluded Island." Lanai has an estimated 3,500 full time residents and miles of untouched beaches. The two luxury resorts on the island, are part of a long term plan of development for Lanai. The island seems to be, on the threshold of diversifying its economic base, for the benefit of its residents and the preservation of its unique environment.
